Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
3,026,917 Mar. 27, 1962 Portable power saw Leo M. Schwartz San Fernando, CA "This invention relates to a power saw particularly for cutting elongated members, such as molding, although the same may have other applications. An object of the present invention is to provide a portable power saw that is both adjusted to the angle of cut desired and operated by a single controller that may be manipulated with one hand. Thus, the invention is characterized by ease of operation together with rapidity and accuracy, the present saw being efficient, timesaving and inexpensive to operate. Another object of the invention is to provide a power saw of the character above indicated that, because the same may be adjusted to the angle of cut and moved through its cutting operation with one hand, the other is left free to hold the member being cut in non-displaceable position during such adjustment and cutting."
A member of the owwm discussion forum, Dave Jeske, had this to say about his B & E Miter Saw: "It is powered by a 3/4hp series wound motor with belt drive. The whole motor and blade are on a type of 4-bar linkage which you push down on and it pivots the blade into the work. It has a sort of blade guard that gets lifted up as the saw goes down. Anyway, to me it is a bit scary as the thing revs up to some very high RPM and sounds like it has no mercy for the slightest error or lack of judgement. I use it with caution."
3,574,315 Apr. 13, 1971 Portable power saw Ace C. Boultinghouse Northridge, CA "A power-driven saw is described which performs mitre cuts and which is adjustable to the angle of cut desired. A turntable is included in which the power-driven saw is pivotally mounted thereto by a spindle. A counterbalance arm is pivoted above a work support and is capable of clearing the saw from the work being cut. A brake shoe is mounted on the work support which can be engaged to press upon a circular flange mounted on the turntable for locking the saw at a desired angle."
2,634,771 Sep. 14, 1972 Adjustable mitre saw Ace C. Boultinghouse Northridge, CA This is the Australian equivalent of US patent 3,574,315.
929,080 Jun. 26, 1973 Adjustable mitre saw Ace C. Boultinghouse Northridge, CA This is the Canadian equivalent of US patent 3,574,315.
3,998,121 Dec. 21, 1976 Miter cutting saw James C. Bennett Calabasas Park, CA Improvement to patent 3,574,315. "One of the problems which constantly faces manufacturers and users of power saw equipment is the need for keeping moving parts clean, and also to effectively dispose of the cuttings or sawdust as the case may be. Equipment of this kind, when set up for a handyman's operation, such as a home workshop, needs also to be small, compact, easily handled, thoroughly safe, and also of such character that it is within the budget of the average home workshop. Because such items of equipment are customarily of modest size permitting them to be mounted on a bench or table, it is helpful to have them so constructed that they cannot readily be overloaded and in any event, if overloaded, not subject to operation which would damage the equipment..."
4,028,975 Jun. 14, 1977 Blade guard lift for power saw James C. Bennett Carlsbad, CA This is a continuation-in-part of the application that became patent 3,998,121.
"A motor operated power saw is mounted on a table by employment of a tiltable platform so that the saw is lowered to cutting position by manually depressing a handle. Surrounding the upper half of the saw blade is a composite guard consisting of a main guard and a movable nose guard which, when the blade is in elevated non-operating condition, cover the exposed portion of the blade. The main guard is pivotally mounted on the tiltable platform and is provided with a cam follower which, upon engagement with a cam track on the table, automatically elevates the main guard and accompanying nose guard as the blade is advanced through a cutting operation."
