Heller started operations in 1836 in Newark, NJ as a manufacturer of hand files. In 1865 they formed the partnership of Heller & Brothers and incorporated in 1899 as the Heller Brothers Co. and again incorporated in 1928 as the Heller Brothers of Ohio.

Over the next several decades, Heller acquired many file making concerns, including:

  • Johnson & Brothers File Co., Newark, New Jersey (1917)
  • Rex File Co., Newcomerstown, Ohio (1917)
  • Vixen Tool Co., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania1 (1917)
  • Masterwrench Corp., Turlock, California
  • Triple A File Co., Milwaukee, Wisconsin
  • Continental File Co., Anderson, Indiana
  • Filecraft, Inc., Cleveland, Ohio
  • Stokes Brothers Mfg. Co., Freehold, New Jersey (1943)
  • American Swiss File & Tool Co., Elizabeth, NJ (1944)
  • Murcott & Campbell Co., Brooklyn, NY (1944)

Heller Brothers of Ohio was finally sold to the Simonds Tool and Steel Co. in 1955 and at that time, the company changed their name to the Heller Tool Co. The company closed it in 2006.
