24,252 May. 31, 1859 Boring Machine John Waugh Elmira, NY This portable timber boring machines seems to have never been manufactured. It was intended for use by "ship-wrights, boat-builders, chair makers and the like", and allowed the drilling of holes at any angle from 0 to 90 degrees above or below horizontal. The patent claims are specific to the exact combination of mechanisms, which implies that there was nothing really new or original to be found it its design.
The inventor patented and manufactured a sheet metal shear, patent 28,027, which remained in production by others long after that patent had expired.
28,027 Apr. 24, 1860 Machine For Cutting Sheet Metal John Waugh Elmira, NY This shear can cut both strips and circles. Known example marked "J. Waugh Elmira, NY PATD APR 24, 1860". After the patent had expired an updated version of this invention was manufactured by Niagara Machine & Tool Works of Buffalo, as their "Niagara Waugh's Circle Shears", which despite the name, could also cut strips. Waugh also patented a machine for trimming the edges of paper hangings on 1858-10-05, 21,710, which in turn was granted a rare "Additional Improvement" patent, 219. Finally, he patented a boring machine, 24,252.
