Founded in 1847 by John Alexander and a Mr. McDougal. Later Mr. G. Sinclair came into the firm. In 1854, Mr. Alexander purchased the firm outright.

The firm secured the rights to A. Winter's Mulay Saw Mill.

  • From the 1864 book Marginilia; or, Gleanings from an Army Note-Book, text ad: "Congaree Iron Works, Columbia, S. C. / John Alexander, Prop'r. John Harrison, Foreman. / Manufactures / Steam Engines of all sizes, iron and brass castings made to order and with dispatch. Portable grist mills of all sizes. Also, The celebrated Scotch bark mill made to order."
  • 1869 Resources of the Southern Fields and Forests, page 665: "...Jno. Alexander, Congaree Iron Works, Columbia, S. C., manufacture 'self skimming' Evaporators, Mills, etc., at a cost from one hundred and fifty-five to one hundred and seventy-five dollars."
  • December 1873 The Rural Carolinian, page 149, in an article on the State Fair at Columbia. "We note the entries of John Alexander, Congaree Iron Works, Circular sawmill gearing, bevelled wheels, gin gearing, iron fronts, chain iron railings. This is an old and well known establishment, well prepared to manufacture or repair."
  • July 1890 Bradstreets' Commercial Reports of the Bankers, Merchants, Manufacturers, and Others, Volume 90, in the section on South Carolina, subsection for Columbia, lists "Alexander John / founder" and "Congaree Iron Works / (see John Alexander)."
  • 1890 Transactions of the State Agricultural and Mechanical Society of South Carolina November 14th 1889 to August 7th, 1890 lists exhibitors at the November 1889 State Fair, including John Alexander of Columbia, for "Castings, S. C. made" ($5 for First Premium), and "'Boss' Straw Cutter" (Diploma).
