In the mid-1860s Parley Jabez Ayres manufactured a patented tire setter, as P. J. Ayres, or, as spelled sometimes during his early years, P. J. Ayers. Ayres was primarily an axe-maker who also patented an auger handle, buggy tops, and a stump puller.
