Mafell was founded in 1899 as Maschinenfabrik Fellbach in Fellbach near Stuttgart. In 1926, Mafell developed the world's first portable electric carpentry machine, a chain cutter (“Machine Type A”). After the company headquarters were relocated to Oberndorf-Aistaig in 1933, Rudolf Mey took over the management of the company two years later.

From 1960 onwards, the machine housings were made of die-cast magnesium. Ernst Krauss became managing director in 1974.

In 1980, Mafell launched the "Erika" mobile underfloor pull saw which held a unique position on the market for twelve years. The circular table saw that for a long time was only available in a typical green color was characterized by an injection-molded base frame and a powerful electric motor. The robust and reliable machine quickly gained a good reputation, especially when used on construction sites or similar occasions. As the saw blade is moved rather than the workpiece, the cutting quality and safety for the user are increased. In some languages, the product name is already used as a generic term for these circular saws.

In 1990, the company moved to its current location in Oberndorf-Lindenhof. In 1997, Mafell GmbH & Co. KG was converted into a joint-stock company. In 1999, the production area was significantly expanded. In 2001, Matthias Krauss, the son of Ernst Krauss, took over the management of the family business.
