Albert A. Bennett made a very early handheld circular saw. The base of the saw had toothed rollers that bit into the stock and, as the saw was pushed forward, the rollers spun the blade via gearing. The saw received an 1881 patent.

  • Listed in the EAIA "Directory of American Toolmakers" as the maker of a "hand circular saw" with an (invalid) patent date of 6 April 1881. The correct date is 5 April 1881.
