In the 1870s C. Van Haagen & Co. was manufacturing metal planers and drill grinders.

1874 Report of the Twenty-Seventh Exhibition of American Manufactures for the Fair at the Franklin Institute October 6 to November 12, 1874, page 136. "C. Van Haagen & Co. Twist Drill Grinding Machine. This Drill Grinder being compact, having the best arrangement for backing off the drills, and giving the proper bevel to the lips. Silver medal."
