Flat stock finishing machine
|
Adam Zimmerman |
Birmingham, MI |
In manufacturing sheet metal, finish sanding of thicknesses less than 0.026 inches (0.66 mm) caused buckling of the sheet. The method previously used was to have pinch rollers push a web of sheet metal below a rapidly driven abrasive belt, with an idler roller ("billy roll") pressing the sheet metal against the abrasive belt. The pushing of the pinch rollers before the belt caused the sheet metal to buckle when pushed against the outfeed pinch rollers. The improvement is to drive the billy roll at the same speed as the pinch rolls, which is less than that of the abrasive belt. With this improvement sheet metal as thin as 0.012 inches (0.30 mm) can be successfully finished. |

Flat stock finishing machine

Improvements to patent 3,012,381; see that patent for a description of of this machine for manufacturing thin sheet metal. See also patent 3,220,146 which is a companion to this improvement patent. The improvement is intended to avoid a problem where the leading edge of the sheet metal web contacting the abrasive belt caused a transverse region of high wear on the belt which leads to shadow lines on the rest of the web of sheet metal. The improvement shifts the axis of the billy roll relative to the forward edge of the abrasive belt as the stock advances so that the leading edge of the sheet metal will ride up on the billy roll ahead of the belt. |
