162,715 Apr. 27, 1875 Valve-Gear for Steam Engines Joseph W. Thompson Salem, Columbiana County, OH Abstract:
The invention relates to the construction and arrangement of devices for connecting the main valve and its sliding cutoff valve with the eccentrics from which they derive motion, that of the cutoff valve being adjustable around its center of rotation.
Claim:
The double-armed rockshaft, R, of the cutoff valve, mounted on the rock-arm, S, of the main valve, which is operated by a fixed eccentric, in combination with an eccentric arranged for adjustment around its center of motion, and the rods connecting said parts, whereby the movement of the cutoff is varied.
167,364 Aug. 31, 1875 Indicator for Steam Engines Joseph W. Thompson Salem, Columbiana County, OH The indicator is designed to register the relative amounts of steam-pressure exerted on The piston at each portion of its stroke. It's in part, an improvement upon the automatic recording-indicator for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to C. B. Richards, March 24, 1863, No. 37,980.
Abstract:
The object of the invention is chiefly to reduce the number and weight of the parts composing Richards' recording mechanism proper, tied thus correspondingly reduce their momentum when in action. to the end of securing a more perfect record of the several steam-pressures existing in the engine-cylinder during a given stroke or strokes of the piston. This reduction in momentum is particularly important in relation to quick-stroke engines for the indication given or delineation made on the paper barrel by the marking- point will be more or less imperfect as the momentum of the moving parts is greater or less. In carrying out my invention I dispense with a separate holder for, the pencil by which the record is made on a drum or paper barrel, and attach the pencil directly to he main lever, to which a vertical vibratory movement is imparted by the reciprocation of he spring-piston under the varying pressure of steam in the cylinder. To preserve the desired parallel movement, I, pivot the working or marking lever to a movable or oscillating fulcrum, connect its free end to a fixed standard by means of a link or bar, and pivot it intermediately of said fulcrum and link directly to the piston-rocs, which latter is necessarily vibrated at each movement of the piston. The invention further includes a compensating connection or joint between the piston-rod and piston, and the means for adjusting the tension of the spring of the drum upon which the record is made.
Claim:
In a steam-pressure recorder, the combi-nation, with the working-lever, carrying the marker, of a movable fulcrum, a fixed standard, F, and link b, connecting the lever directly to the standard.
204,924 Jun. 18, 1878 Governor Joseph W. Thompson Salem, Columbiana County, OH Our invention relates to that class of centrifugal governors in which the balls or weights rotate with and upon the main or driving shaft of the engine, and operate, by variations of angular velocity, to vary the position of an eccentric thereon relatively to the crank, examples of which class will be found in the Letters Patent of Jacob D. Custer, No. 1,179, dated June 21, 1839, and in Letters Patent No. 162,715, granted to Joseph' W. Thompson and the Buckeye Engine Company, (as his assignee,) under date of April 27, 1875.
Abstract:
The improvements herein claimed are intended for application to the governor shown in the patent last above stated and consist, first, in combining, with the pivoted weight-arms, and the links by which they are connected to the movable eccentric, ball-and-socket joints and, second, in combining, with the pivoted weight-arms, stop-pins working in slots in the supporting-case between and equidistant from the pins, which form the pivots of the weight-arms on the one side, and from similar pins on the other side, which latter, when the motion of rotation is in the direction shown by the arrows, form the points of attachment for the springs, said stop-pins abutting at either extremity of the traverse of the arms against spring-cushions secured in the ends of said slots.
Claim:
The combination, with a steam-engine governor adapted to be mounted upon the driving-shaft, of a loose eccentric fitting upon the shaft and connected to the weight-arms of the governor by links, united with said arms by ball-and-socket joints.

RE8,433 Sep. 24, 1878 Valve-Gear for Steam-Engines Joseph W. Thompson Salem, Columbiana County, OH Abstract:
The object of my invention, which relates to governors of the class secured upon and rotating with the main shaft of the engine and hence partaking of the same angular velocity, is to provide, in a governor of simple construction and adaptability to the operation of regulating the movements of a cut-off valve, means for approximating perfect isochronal regulation as far as may be practicable under existing conditions as to load, pressure, and speed, and of readily adjusting the degree of isochronism in consonance with changes of such conditions, when desired. To these ends my improvements consist in the combination of a supporting case or disk adapted to be secured upon the driving-shaft of the engine, arms pivoted to said case at one end and carrying a weight or ball at the other, and springs acting in reverse direction to the centrifugal force of the weights, and connected to the pivoted weight-arms between the weights and the pivots of the arms. My improvements further consist in the combination, with the pivoted weight-arms and their centripetally-acting springs, of a device for varying and adjusting the tension of the springs.
Claim:
The combination, m a steam-engine governor, of a supporting-case, arms pivoted thereto and carrying weights upon their outer ends, and springs whose tension acts in reverse direction to the centrifugal force of the weights throughout the traverse of their arms, said springs being connected to the weight-arms between their pivots and weights.

244,094 Jul. 12, 1881 Cylinder for steam-engine indicators Joseph W. Thompson Salem, OH
314,353 Mar. 24, 1885 Steam Engine Governor Joseph W. Thompson Salem, Columbiana County, OH My invention relates to centrifugal governors or regulators of the class set forth in the following Letters Patent of the United States, upon which it is an improvement, to wit: Reissued Letters Patent No. 8,433, dated September 24, 1878, to myself and the Buckeye Engine Company as my assignee, and Letters Patent No. 204,924, dated June 18, 1878, to myself and Nathan Hunt and said Buckeye Engine Company as our assignee.
Abstract:
The object of my present invention is to promote the attainment of perfect isochronal regulation by counteracting the variable accretion of centripetal force induced in the operation of a governor of the type above specified by the action of the resistance of the parts actuated by the movable eccentric under different degrees of leverage in different positions of the weight-arms. To this end my invention, generally stated, consists in the combination, with a movable valve-operating device and weighted arms and springs adapted to vary the position thereof in opposite directions by the action of centrifugal and centripetal force, respectively, of auxiliary centrifugally acting springs adapted to supplement the action of the weights during the moiety of the traverse of their arms adjacent to the inward limit of their range of motion.
Claim:
In a centrifugal governor of the type specified, the combination, substantially as set forth, of a movable valve-operating device, a weighted arm and centripetally acting spring adapted to vary the position of such device in opposite directions by the action of centrifugal and centripetal force, respectively, and an auxiliary spring adapted to supplement the centrifugal action of the weight during the moiety of the traverse of its arm adjacent to the inward limit of its range of motion.
