Founded in 1869 as the E. T. Lufkin Board and Log Rule Manufacturing Company in Cleveland, OH to serve the logging industry, they specialized in making measuring equipment. The company soon relocated to Saginaw, MI due to its close proximity to the center of the logging industry at the time. This company would later shorten its name to just the Lufkin Rule Company and expand its line to precision measuring tools used in the machinist and woodworking industries.
Eventually, the company would be acquired by the Apex Tool Group and is currently still marketed under the Crescent Lufkin trade name.
