Federal was founded back in 1918 in Providence, Rhode Island and was a manufacturer of very fine metrology instruments, best known for dial indicators, but they made a wide range of precision measuring tools. In 1969, they were sold to Esterline Technologies. Then in 1999 they were sold again to the Carl Mahr holding GmbH in Goettingen, Germany. Tools are now badged Mahr Federal.
