Chicopee Falls, MA |
The July 1913 issue of The Canadian Manufacturer, page 65: "Automatic Planer Stop.—The Usher Automatic Stop Co., Chicopee Falls, Mass., illustrate very effectively the action of the Usher Automatic Stop for planers and other machine tools in a booklet issued by the company. A full description of its action is also given. Co-assignee Frank D. Howard was secretary of the Lamb Knitting Machinery Co., and would become the company president within a few years. Usher was superintendent of that firm and was its chief designer as well. |

Safety stop
|
Charles Hartless Usher |
Chicopee Falls, MA |
This safety-stop for a belt-drive machine with a rod-actuated mechanism to stop the machine. Usher's invention uses "an electrically operated door lock of standard construction which may be bought in hardware stores" combined with a frame with lever that mounts to the machine—a knitting machine in the preferred embodiment—and uses the electrical actuation of the switch to actuate the rod that stops the machine. The motor switch can be a manual switch but typically would be a limit switch mounted on the machine. Usher would obtain a Canadian version of this patent, 140,867. |

Tire-rim tool
|
Charles Hartless Usher |
Chicopee Falls, MA |
This tool is used to contract a split rim as used in early automobile wheels, in preparation for repairing the tire, especially at roadside. A 1936 biography of the inventor says, that he was "responsible for producing the Usher Automatic Planer Stop and the Usher Universal Rim Tool, an accessory that has come into general use throughout the automotive industry." We know that the planer stop (see, e.g., patent 1,606,542) was manufactured by Lamb Knitting Machine Co., and it is likely that that firm also manufactured this tire rim tool. A search for anyone else manufacturing this rim tool failed to turn up any information. Usher's invention was not unique; see, for instance, patent 1,500,900. |
