Founded in 1890 as the Winton Bicycle Co. by Alexander Winton and manufactured his first automobile in 1896. By 1897, he changed the name of his company to the Winton Motor Carriage Co. Then in 1913, Winton founded the Winton Gas Engine Mfg. Co. to manufacture heavy duty oil and diesel engines. In 1924, the company again changed its name to the Winton Engine Co. and in 1930 the company was purchased by the General Motors Corp.Cleveland Engine Division The firm went on to develop diesel engines for railroad locomotives.
