Beginning in about 1922, John Pountney Udal patented and manufactured—as J. P. Udal—guards for power presses. His guards were successful in the UK market but never achieved any success in North America because his guards were designed for the manual-cycling presses, whereas North American power presses automatically cycled, which was mechanically more complex but faster to operate (and, ironically, less safe).
Udal died in 1934 but the business continued without him into the 1970s, as J. P. Udal, Ltd. and as Udal Group Automation.
