A notice in the 3 September 1859 issue of Scientific American notes that an extension was filed for: "John M. Farrar (administrator of the inventor, Jos. E. Andrews, late of Boston, Mass.): Improvement in Planing-machines. Patented Nov. 21, 1845; hearing Nov. 7, 1859." By the time of the extension application the inventor was deceased; John M. Farrar was the administrator. This extension was granted.
The 1860 Trow's New York City Directory carried the following ad: "John M. Farrar, Manufacturer of Planing and Matching Machines, under Andrews' Patent extended, with SINGLE OR DOUBLE CYLINDER. Five sizes, prices from $200 to $750; weight, from 1,200 to 4,700 lbs. This Machine received a Diploma at the U. S. Fair at Chicago, October, 1859. Office, 168 Broadway."
