A history of machinery in a 1920 William H. Field catalog says that Brown was stopped by the Woodworth patent syndicate from making his planers, due to alleged patent infringement. Still, this was a notable patent because it addressed a serious deficiency with the Woodworth design; Charles Tompkins 1889 book, "A History of the Planing Mill", mentions this patent as the only significant improvement to the Woodworth design to date (I would also include Uri Emmon's pressure-bar). Charles Burleigh's patent 14,272, granted in 1856, was a significant improvement to Brown's design: it fixed a problem where there was excessive force on the diagonal arm in certain positions, which led to wear and breakage. |
