In 1912 Higgs Brothers Motors and Dynamos of Birmingham was established by Walter Frank Higgs and brother. Walter had apprenticed at the electrical engineering firm of Duckett and Brown and then spent several years working for a series of larger firms that designed and built larger scale motors, generators, and related switching and monitoring devices. From the beginning the Higgs brothers manufactured electric motors. At some point the name changed to Higgs Motors, Ltd. The company grew steadily over the decades and had 1000 employees by 1961, the year of Walter's death. The following year the business was acquired by Newman Industries Ltd. of Bristol.
