In 1942, mechanical engineer Louis Small established the Service Diamond Tool Co. to manufacture grinder dressers, and, within a few years, hardness testers. Small remained active until at least the 1970s and the business survived him into the 2010s and then was acquired by Sun-Tec Corp.
During the 1940s through to 1970, Small was granted a series of patents related to the manufacture of grinder dressers as well as the grinder dressers themselves and hardness testing machines. Son Howard Small was co-inventor on one of the patents. Another co-inventor was Michael G. Antonik, on a 1966 patent, which is of some note because the president of Sun-Tec Corp. is Mark Antonik.
