A unit for entraining an essentially non-volatile oil finely divided droplet form in an air carrier, comprising: a body having a top and a bottom and an air filet passage extending from one side, an oil supply bowl secured to said bottom, an oil delivery tube secured to said body and within said bowl, entrainment means communicating with said air inlet passage and said oil delivery tube for entraining oil in droplet form in pressurized air from said inlet passage and for directing the flow droplet carrying air upwardly, a barrier member secured to said top and having a concave surface facing said entrainment means for reducing droplet size and for removing larger droplets by centrifugal action and by adhesion to said surface, said body having a through passage for flow of droplet carrying air from said surface to said oil bowl above the level of oil therein, and an outlet passage for flow of droplet-carrying air out of said bowl, and said body having downwardly projecting barriers around said through passage for further removal of larger droplets from the air, a valve member rotatably journaled in said body and extending from said top at one fie of said barrier member to a point between said de-rery tube and said entrainment means for controlling flow of oil, and a ball check valve between said entrainment means and said delivery tube for preventing back flow of oil.

A shaft seal including a pair of coaxial rings having means defining relatively rotatable sealingly engageable annular surfaces, a support member for carrying one of said rings and including a cylindrical wall and a radially extending wall, a radial rigid surface on said one ring axially facing said radial wall of the support member and a cylindrical surface facing said cylindrical wall of the support member, and means for providing a fluid seal between said support and said one ring for allowing axial movement of said ring relative to said cylindrical wall to maintain said annular surfaces in pressure engagement, comprising first and second annular washers of heat-resistant resiliently deformable material having annular edge portions adjacent said cylindrical wall of said support member and opposite annular edge portions adjacent said cylindrical surface of said one ring, a third annular washer of relatively highly deformable material between said first and second washers and having an annular edge portion sealingly engaged with said cylindrical wall and an opposite annular edge portion sealingly engaged with said cylindrical surface, a fourth washer of rigid material in axial facing relation to said second washer, said first washer axially facing said radial surface of said one ring, and spring means acting between said radially extending Wall of said support and said fourth washer for squeezing said first, second and third washers between the rigid fourth washer and said rigid radial surface on said one ring for exerting squeezing forces on said first and second washers whereby the resilient washers will evenly transmit axial pressure to the third washer between them and force the edges thereof into pressure engagement with said cylindrical wall and cylindrical surface.

The method of developing a smooth wear resistant seal face having a low coefficients of friction on an elastomeric seal ring of a seal of the relatively rotating face to face engaging type which comprises providing an elastomeric seal ring with a soft deformable nose portion and a flexible diaphragm portion, insulating the nose portion from the diaphragm portion, spring loading the soft deformable nose portion of the elastomeric seal ring against a hard surface, relatively rotating the nose and surface, loading the nose sufficiently against the hard surface to conform the nose to said surface in good sealing relation therewith, continuing said loading and said relative rotation of the nose and hard surface to develop an elevated glaze hardening temperature for the nose, confining the glaze hardening temperature to the nose, glaze hardening the surface of said nose and thereby reducing the coefficient of friction between the nose and said surface for providing a cool running wear resisting seal, and retaining the flexibility of the diaphragm portion.

A seal of the axially shiftable relatively rotating face-to-face type comprising a first sealing member having an annular sealing surface, a second sealing member having a enacting annular sealing surface in relatively rotating sealing engagement with the surface of said first member, support means for said second sealing member including a first part having a radially inwardly facing cylindrical surface and a second part telescoped within said first part and having a radially outwardly facing cylindrical surface facing said cylindrical surface of the first part and forming an annular space therebetween, said second sealing member being connected to one of said parts, a spring means in said space with one end bottomed on said second part for acting in opposition to the first part to urge said second sealing member to sealing engagement with said first sealing member, a first annular face on said first part facing said spring, a member on the other end of the spring having an annular second face facing said first face, one of said faces having a smooth planar radial surface, and an annular sealing ring formed of a resilient material located in the space between said faces and confined between said cylindrical surfaces and having an axially facing groove located on the side of the ring facing said radial face with a portion of the ring outside of said groove and a portion of the ring inside said groove riding on said radial surface to slide thereon with expansion and contraction of the sealing ring in a radial direction.

In a shaft seal, a member having a cylindrical wall adapted to surround a shaft, a ring having at least a portion thereof surrounding said wall, said portion of said ring surrounding said wall being radially spaced from said wall to form an annular recess in cooperation with said wvall, said ring having a backing shoulder formed at one end of said recess, a coating formed in integrally bonded relationship on said wall adjacent said recess and adjacent said ring, said coating having a thickness of from .2 to .4 mils and a coefficient of friction in the neighborhood of .1, a first insulating annulus abutting said shoulder, said ring and said coating, a second annulus abutting said first annulus, said ring and said coating, said first annulus being formed of resilient material, said second annulus being formed of resilient material, said first annulus having a lesser resiliency than said second annulus and having a high degree of heat resistance to withstand fluid pressures thereagainst, a metal washer disposed in said recess in abutting relationship to said second annulus and having an inner diameter greater than the diameter of said wall, and means for exerting axial force through said washer, said first annulus and said second annulus to produce radial sealing force between said first annulus and said second annulus and said coating, so that slidable adjustment of said first and second annuli, and said wall, is -afforded with a highly effective sealing action being maintained therebetween.

A lubricating structure comprising a housing, a porous metal bearing in said housing having a bore therethrough for receiving a shaft and a radially aligned bore extending thereinto in spaced relation to said bore for receiving said shaft, an opening extending through said housing and having a reduced portion in register with said radial bore in said bearing, a relatively wide oil reservoir portion and an outer cap receiving portion, a cap release-ably seated in said cap receiving portion, a supply of oil in said oil reservoir portion and a radially extending wick having one end grippingly secured in said cap, said wick extending through said supply of oil through said reduced portion of said opening in said housing and into snug engagement with said radial bore in said bearing whereby to distribute oil from said supply of oil into and through said bearing to effect an even distribution to the bearing surface forming said bore in said bearing for receiving said shaft.

A compressor structure for maintaining a substantially unchanging volume of lubricant in a crankcase thereof comprising a compressor including piston means, a crankshaft therefor, a crankcase, and means for maintaining a substantially constant volume in the crankcase comprising a float chamber, means for supplying lubricant to said float chamber, valve means controlling the level of lubricant in said float chamber and including float means for controlling the passage of lubricant from said means supplying lubricant to said float chamber, a first conduit communicating the lower portion of the float chamber below 15the lubricant level therein with the lower portion of the crankcase, and a second conduit communicating the upper portion of the fluid chamber above the lubricant level therein with the upper portion of the crankcase, said crankcase defining an opening for the second conduit disposed in a plane normal to the axis of rotation of the crankshaft and disposed at a level above any level to which lubricant may be agitated by the crankshaft, thereby to provide communication of atmosphere between the float chamber and the crankcase and to prevent circulation of fluid between the float chamber and the crankcase so as to continuously and uninterruptedly equalize pressure conditions in the float chamber and the crankcase.

In a shaft seal or the like for effecting a seal between a pair of relatively rotatable elements, an annular support element of flexible resilient material having first and second sleeve portions and an intermediate diaphragm portion interconnecting said sleeve portions, means for securing said second sleeve portion to one of the relatively rotatable elements, a seal ring of brittle lubricating material having a cylindrical outer surface and a sealing face arranged to co-act with a sealing face on the other of the relatively rotatable element to form a seal, and a rigid band having a cylindrical inner surface for pressing said first sleeve portion into engagement with said cylindrical outer surface of said seal ring, said first sleeve portion being compressed between said cylindrical inner and outer surfaces to an extent sufficient to frictionally hold said seal ring against axial movement, and said first sleeve portion and said seal ring having axially extending interlocked projection and recess means to prevent relative rotation thereof.

An oiler assembly comprising an oil cup defining an oil chamber therein with an opening, a pivotal cover for closing said chamber opening, means pivotally mounting the cover on said cup for pivotal movement about its rear edge with the front edge extending over said opening, a resilient cover closing spring strip having an arcuate portion extending downwardly from the rear of the cover in a continuous curve extending to the lower end of the strip and shaped to bend along its length with the application of force toward the cover to prevent excessive bending at the cover, said strip having a base end continuing from said arcuate portion, and a stationary reaction member having a reaction surface engaged by the base end of the strip urging the cover toward closed position, said reaction surface positioned with respect to the pivotal mounting means for the cover so that the cover will be urged toward closed position in all positions of the cover.

The casing is U-shaped, opening in an axial direction, and has one or more keys lugs extending longitudinally on the inner face of the outer wall, each with a crosshead at its outer end. The inner assembly includes an adapter ring with a slot or keyway for each lug wide enough to clear the crosshead. The adapter is retained in the casing by the crosshead when rotated to abut one side of the keyway with the lug. The adapter carrier a carbon seal nose projecting from the casing to ride on the face of an adjoining mating ring. A J-shaped temperature-resisting plastic packing ring has the leg portion thereof sealed against the adapter ring with an elastomeric O-ring and the hooked portion thereof loaded by a garter spring against the inner surface of the inner peripheral wall of the casing. A ferrule ring fits in the adapter and is pressed by a wave spring against the elastomer O-ring to seal the J-packing against the adapter ring. This ferrule has one or more radially projecting ears fitting in a groove at the back end of the adapter ring and this groove is slotted at intervals to permit assembly of the ferrule into the adapter. Relatively rotating face ring-type shaft seals especially useful for sealing the shaft bearings and lubricant chamber of mud motor driven downhole drill rigs, have a plurality of telescoped annular seal rings slidably mounted in an annular carrier element and riding over the radial face on a face ring to define a sealed intermediate chamber therebetween. This intermediate chamber may be filled with lubricant. Either the telescoped rings or the face rings rotate with the shaft. Biasing means, such as a plurality of springs, load end faces on the seal rings against the radial face of the face ring. Pressure transmission means, such as pistons, O-rings, or the like, mounted in either the carrier element or the face ring, are loaded by the ambient media pressure, such as drilling fluid, to maintain pressure in the intermediate chamber responsive to the pressure of the ambient media. When the areas of the pressure transmission means exposed to ambient pressure and to intermediate chamber pressure are equal, a zero or negligible pressure differential will be maintained across the outer telescoped seal ring to prevent the ambient media, which is frequently quite abrasive, from entering the outer sealing ring interface. The inner telescoped seal ring serves as an auxiliary back-up face ring seal for the protected bearing chamber. Since the abrasive media being sealed does not enter the interfaces of the rings, the end faces of the inner and outer sealing rings riding on the face ring can be reduced or narrowed to a minimum and coated with a hard facing material such as tungsten carbide.

An annular, stationary floating member surrounds the shaft and is exposed in the internal bore. The floating member includes a surface in sealing engagement with the rotary seal member. An annular slip ring is disposed in the internal bore, and in contact with the floating member and the contact surface. The slip ring provides an articulated link between the floating member and the contact surface of the stationary member, by virtue of being radially displaceable along a rear surface of the floating member.
