An 1889 issue of Manufacturer & Builder carried a brief notice:
"We call attention to the advertisement of the Dirigo Engine & Machine Works on our third cover page. This enterprising establishment manufactures high-grade engines and boilers, and wood-working machinery of every description, and is prepared to furnish single machines or to contract for complete plants. All the products of these works are first-class in every particular, being of the best material and workmanship, and are furnished at moderate prices. An extensive line of second-hand machinery of all kinds is also offered at great bargains. The works of the Dirigo Engine & Machine Works, G. H. Scanlan, manager, are at 171 to 177 Kennebec street, Portland, Maine."
Unfortunately, the "Making of America" online archive of this journal does not include the covers ads, which were lost when the issues were bound into volumes.
By 1891 it seems that this business was operating as Scanlan & Co., and were manufacturing sawmills, shingle mills, and steam engines, among other products.
