Tool for cutting screw-threads
|
Herman Dock |
Philadelphia, PA |
This lathe attachment is used to cut very accurate threads, such as for lathe leadscrews. It uses a series of disc-shaped cutters to progressively cut the thread to accurate form. This patent was improved in Edward Rivett's patent 652,643, which used Dock's cutters but makes several refinements to the rest of the design. |

Thread-cutting attachment for lathes
|
Edward Rivett |
Boston, MA |
The inventor assigned the patent to "the Rivett-Dock Company, of Camden, New Jersey, and Faneuil, Massachusetts." The patent provides improvements to patent 632,678, granted to Herman Dock. This lathe attachment works by engaging a series of cutters that progress from rough heavy cuts to a fine finishing cut, which was claimed to produce the same quality results as a single-point finishing tool in less than a third the time. This attachment is shown in an advertisement in the June 30, 1910 issue of American Machinist; the ad was from the Rivett Lathe Mfg Co., and the tool was called the Rivett-Dock Threading Tool. |
