Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

806,815 Dec. 12, 1905 Wrench Emil R. Klemm Chicago, IL The wrench is of the type with a screw adjusting jaw, and an eccentric clamp within the movable jaw to clamp the wrench to the wagon axle nut. Improved by Klemm's Dec. 17, 1907 patent (no. 873,868).

The wagon axle nut wrenches marked INTERNATIONAL MFG. CO. and W. E. PRATT of Chicago and marked "PATENT PENDING" or with this patent date also show the features of patent no. 873,868.
873,868 Dec. 17, 1907 Wrench Emil R. Klemm Chicago, IL The adjusting screw sets the size; the eccentric clamp tightens the jaws. This patent together with Klemm's Dec. 12, 1905 patent (no. 806,815) was used for the International Wagon Nut Wrench.
William E. PRATT of Chicago also produced the wrench, marked with the Dec. 12, '05 patent date. See photo accompanying entry for patent no. 806,815.

Production of Klemm trucks stopped in 1918, probably because of wartime shortages; production never resumed.

207,033 Dec. 28, 1920 Wrench Harry G. Norwood Chicago, IL This patent is similar to US patent 1,363,343, granted to the same inventor but not assigned to Klemm. Emil R. Klemm was a Chicago manufacturer of jacks, windlasses, and metalworking machinery, and he is known to have manufactured wrenches as well, though we cannot confirm for certain that he manufactured this alligator wrench.
1,410,193 Mar. 21, 1922 Vehicle Emil R. Klemm Chicago, IL Inventor E. R. Klemm manufactured light trucks between 1917 and 1918. It appears likely that the war caused him to stop production of trucks, and it never resumed.
