USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
505,844 Oct. 03, 1893 Auger Azariah Yeldon Pearl West Lebanon, ME An example is reported, labeled "MADE BY THE PEARL SQUARE AUGER MFG CO. NEW YORK. USA. PAT OCT 3 '93, AUG 11 '96, JUNE 18 '98." These dates correspond, respectively, to patents 505,844, 606,575, and 788,941.
565,500 Aug. 11, 1896 Auger Azariah Yeldon Pearl Rochester, NH The second in a series of patents where the inventor created and refined his square-hole auger. An example is labeled "MADE BY THE PEARL SQUARE AUGER MFG CO. NEW YORK. USA. PAT OCT 3 '93, AUG 11 '96, JUNE 18 '98." These dates correspond, respectively, to patents 505,844, 606,575, and 788,941, which implies that the present patent design was short-lived. The present patent's improvements are aimed at lubricating the boring-head to prevent overheating, and consists of channels where oil can be conveyed down the shaft to the boring-head. A clutch is used to disengage the cutters when reversing out of the hole. Judging by the subsequent patent, the clutch mechanism was too complex and was designed out altogether.
606,575 Jun. 28, 1898 Auger Azariah Yeldon Pearl Lebanon, ME An example is reported, labeled "MADE BY THE PEARL SQUARE AUGER MFG CO. NEW YORK. USA. PAT OCT 3 '93, AUG 11 '96, JUNE 18 '98." These dates correspond, respectively, to patents, 505,844, 606,575, and 788,941. The present invention provides improvements to the spindle-support, to the guide-frame, and avoids the need for the clutch required by the design of patent 565,500.
88,065 Jun. 28, 1904 Auger Azariah Yeldon Pearl West Lebanon, ME See patent 505,844 for more information on the inventor and his company.
788,941 May. 02, 1905 Auger Azariah Yeldon Pearl West Lebanon, ME An example is reported, labeled "MADE BY THE PEARL SQUARE AUGER MFG CO. NEW YORK. USA. PAT OCT 3 '93, AUG 11 '96, JUNE 18 '98." These dates correspond, respectively, to patents, 505,844, 606,575, and 788,941. The present invention provides improved chip removal: a tube rises vertically from the guide-block to an orifice near the top of the square frame. The drive shank passes through the center of that tube.
845,191 Feb. 26, 1907 Boring-machine Azariah Yeldon Pearl West Lebanon, ME The inventor's primary business was in manufacturing an auger bit for cutting square holes; see patent 505,844 among others. He also manufactured hand-powered boring machines to drive his augers. This 1907 patent post-dates his auger patents and provides a more completely thought out machine to drive one of his augers. "This invention has for its object to provide means for holding the outer casing of the tool against rotation, means for rotating the spindle of the tool, means for feeding a lubricant to the tool, means for controlling the feed of the lubricant, means for adjusting the position of the outer casing of the tool to cause it to cut at various angles, means for advancing the tool without destroying its support or angular adjustment, and means for driving out the tool."
