The National Brake & Electric Co. was created in 1906 with the renaming of the National Electric Co. by the Westinghouse Co., its new owners. Under either name, the company's specialty was vehicle braking systems, especially for street cars. They also did a good business in air compressors. Neither of those products would qualify for a listing on this site, but we have seen a couple of World War I era engine lathes with this company's name cast into them. It is likely that these lathes were manufactured to help meet the tremendous wartime demand for lathes, especially for manufacturing shells. In any event, this was a short-lived and ill-publicized diversion for the company—so far we have not found a single ad or article mentioning that they made lathes—and around 1930 the company was absorbed completely in to the Westinghouse Co.
