The Springfield Separator Co. of Springfield, Vermont, was established to manufacture a centrifugal separator for removing metal cuttings from lubricating oil; according to a later mention, this occurred in 1896. An 1898 patent for such a separator was granted to Samuel A. Baker and Melvin F. Colby of Springfield. In 1902 Baker was granted a patent for a multi-spindle turret drill press and is is possible, but unconfirmed, that Springfield Separator began manufacturing this invention was well.

In March 1903 the National Separator & Machine Co. was incorporated to succeed the Springfield Separator Co. in manufacturing oil separators and turret drills. At this time they were located at 41 South Main street in Manchester, N. H. At first the company president was Colby, the manager was Baker, and the treasurer was John Lyman Porter. Soon, however, Carmi King was manager and Baker was superintendent, with Colby seemingly no longer with the company. One year later the business relocated to a larger space in the factory of the former Concord Machine Co. at 43 South Main street in Concord, N. H.

the National Separator & Machine Company's cylinder-style multi-spindle turret drill presses were sensitive drills that were intended for step drilling, counter-sinking and tapping operations on the same hole; these drill presses were especially popular with automobile manufacturers. During World War I they manufactured turret lathes as well.

By 1909 they had opened an office at 89 State St., Boston. It seems that this became their headquarters, though presumably their manufacturing operations remained in Concord; by 1909 Porter was the company president and treasurer, and Baker was superintendent. By 1921 their Boston office had relocated to 739 Boylston, and that date is the last reliable data point we have found for the National Separator & Machine Co.: it seems likely that the company disappeared during the post-war depression that decimated the machine tool industry.
