Improvement in ratchet-drills
|
Bernard Gallagher |
NB, Canada |
This ratchet drill uses a grooved ball within a ring. The handle is attached to the ring, which has pawls that engage with the grooves on the ball which are longitudinal in extent and rectilinear in cross-section. One pawl is pushed forward and the other pulled back, which selects the direction of rotation. The advantage of this mechanism is that the handle can be at any elevation angle to the hole being drilled. |

Machine for shearing metal
|
Bernard Gallagher |
NB, Canada |
This shear is "especially adapted for the purpose of cutting boot or shoe patterns of metal or pasteboard..." This patent provides solid links between this Bernard Gallagher of Saint John, New Brunswick, and Bernard Gallagher of Lynn, Massachusetts. Lynn was a hotbed of boot and shoe manufacturers, and the Lynn-based Gallagher made machinery for that market, including shears strongly resembling this patent drawing. In addition, the two witnesses were based out of a Boston patent office and these men were also witnesses on the Lynn-based Gallagher's patents, e.g., patent 341,803. The most likely explanation is that these Bernard Gallaghers are one and the same. |
