Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
51,964 Apr. 13, 1896 Vise Charles J. Jackson Erie, PA This is the Canadian equivalent of US patent 563,040. A subsequent improvement to that us patent, 631,013, was not granted an equivalent Canada patent.
563,040 Jun. 30, 1896 Vise Charles J. Jackson Erie, PA The innovation is improved gripping surfaces on the vise jaws, created by using multiple strips of steel that can each be reversed to expose a fresh edge. See also Canada patent 51,964, and US patent 631,013 that addresses a shortcoming of this jaw design where the strips can fall out even when originally tightly clamped.
63,288 Jun. 14, 1899 Feed water heater Charles J. Jackson Erie, PA
631,013 Aug. 15, 1899 Vise Charles J. Jackson Erie, PA Improvements to the vise of patent 563,040 to address a problem where the steel strips forming the jaws could loosen and fall out: this patent provides notches on the steel strips plus matching lugs in the jaw sockets, in order to hold the strips in place.
707,233 Aug. 19, 1902 Screw-cutting die Charles J. Jackson Erie, PA This patent date has been seen on several pipe threading dies from Reed Manufacturing Co. The dies clearly use the patented feature of "chasers", or cutters, embedded in the cast die-plate.
1,024,728 Apr. 30, 1912 Vise Charles J. Jackson Vineland, NJ An example somewhat resembling the patent drawing has been seen, labeled only with the patent date and "TLT No. 1". The 1910-06-30 American Machinist had an ad from Jackson Vise & Tool Co., New York, and the illustrated vise is a near-exact match to the patent drawing.
1,169,487 Jan. 25, 1916 Shaft-hanger Charles J. Jackson Easton, PA See also Canada patent 172,820.
172,820 Oct. 31, 1916 Shaft hanger Charles J. Jackson Easton, PA This is the Canadian equivalent of US patent 1,169,487.
