Key to Links for Patent Information

USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

2,099 Feb. 21, 1873 Blind slat tenoning machine Adam Cant ON, Canada
2,680 Aug. 27, 1873 Improvement in wood planing machines Adam Cant ON, Canada Cant describes himself as a "pattern maker". The patent is for a mechanism to adjust the feed rollers.
2,681 Aug. 29, 1873 Improvement in rotary wood planing machines John Gourlay ON, Canada Cant was a pattern maker and Gourlay was a mechanic. The patent is for a mechanism to drive the bed "by the combination of toothed wheels working with teeth cast or fixed upon the lower side of the before-mentioned rotary bed slats". The patent also covers a sliding frame that could be adjusted to take up wear. Finally the patent covers a mechanism to oil the bed plates.

4,530 Mar. 22, 1875 Rotary bed planer Adam Cant ON, Canada See also US patent 174,944. The invention covers the design of the rotary bed linkages.
174,944 Mar. 21, 1876 Improvement in planing-machines Adam Cant ON, Canada Equivalent to Canada patent 4,530. The patented machine is a rotary-bed planer. The patent covers the design of the bed-slats and the driving-wheels for the bed.
The 1897 Cowan & Co. catalog has a "12 in. patent revolving bed moulder" bearing this patent date. Although Cowan Co. was a rival to Cant, Gourlay & Co., this patent is the only remotely likely candidate matching the patent date (there were several Canadian patent issued on the same date but no other patent from that date is applicable to a moulder).
7,215 Mar. 14, 1877 Improvement in loose pulleys William Henry Essery ON, Canada Although no assignee or co-inventor is listed, the patent drawing is titled, "Essery & Webster's Improved Pulley". Patent {CA14,406} constituted an extension to this patent, and was granted to Essery and to Stephen Webster of Hamilton, Ont. We don't know anything about Webster, but Essery was apparently a shoe manufacturer.
"Essery's Patent Loose Pulley" is listed in an 1882 catalog from Cant, Gourlay & Co., Galt.
14,406 Mar. 13, 1882 Improvement in loose pulleys Stephen Webster ON, Canada This patent constitutes an extension to patent {CA7,215}. The drawing shown here is taken from the earlier patent.
