This is a 0-1" micrometer mounted on a bar with a pin and a set of precision bushings. Of the 6 possible positions in the example shown (image #2), only one was .001" off. The rest were less than that.
My invention relates to that class of micrometer-calipers, which measures distances greater than one inch by means of moving a slide, which carries one of the caliper-points. The objects of my invention are accurate and expeditious adjustment of the slide and improved means for taking up the wear of the micrometer-screw. To enable others to make and use my improved calipers, I will give a description of the same in detail, reference being had to the drawings hereto annexed. The beam A, Fig. 1, has the two parts a and &. The part a is rectangular and of equal size throughout its length and the part 5 integral with the part a is bent at a right angle to it and terminates in the cylindrical enlargement c, which is tapped to receive the screw B. The part a is perforated in two lines parallel and near to the sides of the beam, into which hardened-steel bushings d are forced. These bushed holes are arranged to operate in conjunction with the bushed holes in the slide, so that when bushings having like numbers are brought in line the micrometer-screw being in the position shown in Fig. 1, the distance between caliper points C and D will be as many inches or units of measure as the number on the coincident bushings indicates. Thus in Fig. 1 bushings 3 are in line, and the distance between points C and D is three units. Fractional measurements are obtained in the same manner as in the ordinary micrometers. The screw B is reduced in size where it protrudes from the beam, and is chamfered at the end C, and forms one of the caliper-points. The slide E is a rectangular box fitted to the beam, except on the lower side, where room enough is left for the shoe or gib g to fill. On its lower side a circular boss is raised, which is tapped to receive the thumb-screw which passes through the lower side of the slide and comes against the shoe g. The shoe g is turned up at each end at right angles to hold it in place when the screw is released. On the upper side of the slide extends upward, the arm e, terminating in the cylindrical enlargement , which is tapped to receive the part F. When the slide is in place on the beam A, the axes of the threaded parts c and are in line. The wider sides, h, of the slide are perforated in two parallel lines, which are in the same planes as the lines of the holes in the beam, and the holes are equal in number. Into these holes, bushings i are forced, and are ground out, as is hereinafter explained. The pin G-, with the knurled head, is fitted to these bushings and holds the slide from endwise movement when the tool is in use.

Starrett Athol, MA The object of this invention is to furnish a speeded micrometer in which the movement of the spindle toward and from the anvil by rotation is much more rapid than in those heretofore known, the instrument being at the same time rendered more sensitive than hitherto. These objects I attain by providing the outer end of the spindle with a milled projecting thumb-piece materially less in diameter than the milled hub at the end of the external sleeve, to which the finger and thumb are usually applied in rotating the spindle. This projecting thumb-piece may be either an integral part of the hub which closes the outer end of the sleeve or a part of the spindle itself prolonged through said hub, or a separate pin or plug extending into it. Another feature of this invention introduces into the cavity of the threaded barrel a coiled spring surrounding the spindle and serving to keep its screw-threads pressed back into such close engagement with the female screw as to avoid all backlash and insure the utmost accuracy. The screw-thread is preferably ratchet-shaped or with the incline mainly on one side, to present on the other side a square shoulder to the work. The spring is compressed between the bottom of the barrel and a defined shoulder or collar at the end of the threaded part of the spindle.

The pistons move in response to movement of passage contacting finger elements and the hydraulic system responds to piston movement to generate a measure of the passage area. At least one set of the finger elements has rotatable passage contacting members, each member having an elongated passage contacting surface. Each member rotates about a respective axis positioned to keep the center of each contact surface in a fixed position relative to the finger. Stop means are provided by fixed outboard finger elements, juxtaposed opposite movable finger elements, for providing improved stability for positioning the comparison gage.

A staging fixture for holding a single vane nozzle assembly in a predetermined position enables characterization of the effective throat area of the nozzle assembly. The fixture has a holding element for supporting the assembly in a central position, mechanical structure for locating the assembly in the holding element, a first reference surface structure having a first reference surface in opposed juxtaposition to the central position, and a second reference surface structure having a second reference surface in opposed juxtaposition to the central position and on a side opposite to that of the first reference surface. Open area measurements made with a standard reference vane element provide alignment or calibration measurements whereby leading and trailing "half areas" of a single vane airfoil assembly can be determined. An automated selection and vane retrieval method and apparatus provide for the automatic retrieval of the vanes from known storage locations and the assembly of the nozzle to provide specified total area and uniform air flow across the entire nozzle and circumference.

A scale and slider in a linear displacement measuring instrument have spaced opposed parallel surfaces bearing aligned patterns of thin flat conductive elements. The scale pattern consists of equally spaced parallel bars transverse to displacement with enlarged aligned central portions which form collectively a single set of coupling electrodes. A pair of aligned sensor electrodes are fixed on the surface of the slider opposite the coupling electrodes of the scale and matching arrays of transmitter elements are arranged on opposite sides of the sensor electrodes and grouped axially in space quadrature. Alternate interdigitated sets of the transmitter electrodes on the slider are excited with oppositely phased square wave signals. The signals picked up by the sensor electrodes on the slider are fed to separate coarse plate counting and fine plate interpolation circuits. In the fine count circuit, the displacement-dependent amplitude of the signals from first one and then the other of the sensor electrodes is amplitude demodulated and digitally converted by a dual slope integrator. The reference signal for the return slope is furnished by placing co-phase signals on the transmitter electrodes. Battery life is prolonged by staged power down modes which remove bias voltages from selected analog components while retaining limit values.

Trapezoidal sliding members are disposed between the cylindrical members so that the displacement of the measuring unit from a reference surface is the average of the various displacements of the individual probes. The arrangement also results in each probe contacting the surface of the object with substantially equal force. Therefore, the arrangement has application as a clamping device.

A box beam comprises at least two elongated component blocks of granite, each containing at least one flat surface, the flat surfaces having identical dimensions. Igneous rock material is removed from the flat surface of at least one of the component blocks so as to form at least one open cavity in that component block. The interior cavity has boundary walls of a predetermined, though not necessarily uniform, thickness. The two component blocks are then bonded together along the remaining unremoved portions of the flat surfaces so as to form a box beam. The system described above for manufacturing hollow granite box beams reduces weight while maintaining stiffness comparable to that of the composite ceramic or metal beams along with the inherent stability of granite, e.g., low coefficient of thermal expansion, in a highly efficient manufacturing process.

Thereby the hole saw, when engaged by the thrust member and the at least one pin, does not wobble off-axis.
