The L. S. Starrett Co. is best known for their machinists' hand tools—micrometers, levels, squares, etc.—which are outside of the scope of this site (The Vintage Machinery website has information on makers of woodworking and metalworking machines, engines and motors, vises and handheld power tools.) Starrett is listed here because they made vises, especially bench vises. Levi Starrett patented a bench vise, sued his former employer, Athol Machine Co., for patent infringement, and then acquired the company when that lawsuit was settled in his favor.
