Manufacture of cutting-disks
|
William U. Colthar |
Springfield, OH |
See patent 804,520 for the probable target of the cutting disks to be manufactured. The process of this patent consists of three steps to produce cutting disks with the cutting edge in line with one of the faces of the disk. First, flat disks are cut from a sheet of steel by a stamping press or other means. Second, the circumferential rim of the disk is bent down, and third, the resulting disk is ground flat on the concave side until a sharp cutting edge is achieved (the inner part of the disk is preferably left untouched so that the cutting side of the disk remains slightly hollow. |

An ad in the August 1912 Machinery clearly shows this patent vise, manufactured by the Victor Vise Co. of 15-19 West Washington St., Springfield, OH. That company was owned by William U. Colthar, who died unexpectedly in January 1914. In 1916, Western Tool & Mfg. Co. acquired the assets of the Victor Vise Co. and rebranded the Victor vise line as "Champion" vises. |

It is mildly ironic that the inventor died a couple of months before the patent was issued. He was the owner of the Victor Vise Co., which ceased doing business after his death. |
