Pipe-Tongs
|
Oliver B. Lay |
Oil City, PA |
The patented feature is a slightly tapered rectangular or triangular bit which can be driven out and rotated to provide three or four sharp biting surfaces before it needs to be sharpened or replaced. This feature appeared in other tongs type pipe wrenches.
1884 and 1892 OIL WELL SUPPLY catalogs list "LAY'S PATENT TONG - all sizes from 3/4 to 12 inch" along with "extra bits." A known example is a 78 inch monster that weighs over 80 pounds.
Corresponding British patent 187803666 was registered Sept. 17, 1878. |

Pipe Wrench
|
George Edwin Franklin |
Natick, MA |
The wrench consists of three parts; the movable jaw, the adjusting nut, and the main stock. The shank of the movable jaw fits in an angled slot through the main stock, with the adjusting nut in an intersecting slot. The main slot is set at roughly 60 degrees, and is larger at both ends than in the center, allowing for rocking motion of the adjustable jaw.
An early "loop handle" 6 inch example is marked with the patent date.
An 1893 listing gives Franklin as the maker, and an 1892 catalog lists 8 sizes from 6 through 48 inches.
Some examples incorporate John Eaton's June 22, 1897 improvements (pat. no. 584,814).
A 1905 ad for the FRANKLIN PIPE WRENCH manufactured? or distributed? by OIL WELL SUPPLY CO. of Pittsburgh shows a replaceable insert in the movable jaw. |

Flange Wrench
|
Julius W. Kellam |
Brooklyn, NY |
This is a fixed-size version of Kellam's adjustable size flange wrench (patent no. 487,331). In this version, the gripping surface of the movable jaw is a roller cam which can be positioned for tightening or loosening. The jaw is moved into engagement by a cam lever. The "V" shaped jaw is firmly fixed to the handle rather than attached by a pivot bolt.
The KELLAM FLANGE WRENCH produced by Eaton, Cole & Burnham used a screw-adjusting slide rather than a cam lever for the grip tightener, and a second screw-adjustment to set the size. |
