The company was manufacturing boilers and marine steam engines in 1922. Other products included river steamers, towboats, and steel barges. The plant was located on the south bank of the Kanawha River, with access to the Ohio River. The business closed in 1931, and one of the last two boats completed, the towboat Vesta, renamed the J. S. Lewis, is maintained in operating condition by its owner, Amherst Madison. The company converted the boat from coal to diesel in 1958. It had received a ticket in 1954 from the City of Cincinnati for excessive smoke.
