Russell Engine Co. was founded by the same family as
C. M. Russell & Co., also of Massillon, but they operated as separate companies. In 1912, Russell Engine Co. merged with the
Griscom-Spencer Co. of New York City and New Jersey. The new firm, the
Griscom-Russell Co., consolidated manufacturing in Massillon. The company's products in its 1918 marine auxiliaries catalog included "evaporators, distillers, evaporator feed heaters, feed water heaters, bath heaters, oil coolers, oil heaters, grease extractors, aerating filters, coils." A photograph in the catalog shows "Power Plant Specialties & Engines" painted on the main building.
