G. Buchanan & Co. were self-described marine and mechanical engineers and manufacturers of general machinery. Their 1864 catalog includes stationary steam engines, boilers, water wheels, water turbines, metal-working machinery, grain mills, brick machinery, woodworking machinery, pumps, hoists, cranes, boats, and railway equipment. Their products appear to include every English industrial endeavor of the day, and about three-fourths were manufactured by the company, according to the 1864 catalog. The catalog has numerous references to "the works" but no name is given other than York Place Iron Works on the Chapter III title page.
