J. E. Mitchell was a manufacturer of grindstones and grindstone fixtures, operated by hand, treadle, and line shaft power. Applications ranged from machine shops to ships. In its later years, the business was a major supplier of grindstones to the cut glass industry. Stones were sourced from the U.S. and Europe, and cut with steam-powered saws.
James Mitchell founded the business in 1810, and it passed to his son J. E. Mitchell, and then his son Wilson Mitchell. Wilson Mitchell closed the business in 1922 as result of loss of their European supply of stone in World War I and the deflationary recession of 1920-1921 in the U.S.
