USPTO = U.S. Patent Office . Images of the actual patent can be viewed on the U.S. Patent Office web site but a special TIFF viewer must be installed with your browser in order properly work. More information on how to configure your computer to view these patents can be found at TIFF image Viewers for Patent Images.
DATAMP = Directory of American Tool And Machinery Patents . A sister site to VintageMachinery.org with information on patents related to machinery and tools. A much easier user interface than the USPTO's for finding information on machinery patents.

Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
14,221 Feb. 12, 1856 Wrench William Baxter Newark, NJ Diagonal screw adjusts the opening of two open end jaws.
Updated by Baxter's July 17, 1883 patent (no. 281,431). J. Ashton Greene's Feb. 19, 1884 patent (no. 14,756) is a design enhancement that coincides with the wrench being produced by Greene, Tweed & Co. of New York -- they had registered "labels" for both forms of Baxter wrenches at the U.S. Patent Office in March, 1883.
George C. Taft's Dec. 14, 1869 patent no. 97,988 presents an alternative screw arrangement for a diagonal adjusting "S" wrench.
28,033 Apr. 24, 1860 Belt-fastening George W. Blake East Pepperell, Middlesex County, MA This is the earlier patent for the famous "Blake belt fastening" which was a very successful method of joining the ends of belting for driving machinery, from small sewing machines to wide and thick leather belts capable of transmitting 50 or more horsepower. Three slits were cut near either end of the belt, and brass studs were inserted, each stud bridging across the ends. The studs did not touch the pulleys and were reported to make stronger joins than lacing and were smoother in operation as well. See also patent 31,859; both of these patents were reissued.
31,859 Mar. 26, 1861 Belt-fastening George W. Blake East Pepperell, Middlesex County, MA
RE3,064 Aug. 04, 1868 Improved belt-fastening G. W. Blake Pepperell, Middlesex County, MA
RE3,065 Aug. 04, 1868 Improved belt-fastening David M. Weston Boston, MA From September 1869 Journal of the Franklin Institute, in an article on belting: "Blake's Patent Belt Studs. This approved device for fastening rubber and leather belting was patented April, 1860 and March, 1861, and re-issued August, 1868. Messrs. Greene, Tweed & Co., 10 Park Place, New York, have the sole right to make and sell this invention, and during the last four years have supplied the studs to over ten thousand manufacturing concerns in the United States. They are recommended to be better and cheaper than either lacing or hooks..."
81,717 Sep. 01, 1868 Improvement in belt-punches David M. Weston Boston, MA This punch is intended for punching holes near the end of leather belts, either for lacing or for the inventor's belt studs (patents 28,033 and 31,859).
84,605 Dec. 01, 1868 Improvement in Wrenches William Baxter Newark, NJ Adjustable S-Wrench consisting of two pieces mortised into each other, and connected with a left- and right-hand screw with a central knurl. With a graduated scale stamped on the side, the design could also function as an outside calipers.
Corresponding British patent 186803985 (i.e. 3,985 of 1868) was granted Dec. 31, 1868.
Improvements to the tenons were addressed in Baxter's July 17, 1883 patent (no. 281,432).
84,878 Dec. 15, 1868 Mode of fastening India-rubber tires on carriage-wheels J. Ashton Greene Brooklyn, NY
281,431 Jul. 17, 1883 Wrench William Baxter Jersey City, NJ This is an improvement on Baxter's "Diagonal" wrench. The improvement is in strengthening the base of the jaws, and interlocking the wrench halves, to resist jaw spread.
The earlier patent is 14,221, issued February 12, 1856. J. Ashton Greene's February 19, 1884 design patent (no. 14,756) is a further refinement.
281,432 Jul. 17, 1883 Wrench William Baxter Jersey City, NJ This is Baxter's improvement to his "S" adjustable wrench. The improved tenons add to the wrench's rigidity. Baxter's 1st patent for this style (No. 84,605), was issued December 1st, 1868.
D14,756 Feb. 19, 1884 Design For A Wrench J. Ashton Greene Brooklyn, NY The patent is for "a more graceful shape" for the diagonal wrench patented by William Baxter Feb. 12, 1856 (pat. no. 14,221) and improved on July 17, 1883 (pat. no. 281,431).
461,603 Oct. 20, 1891 Wrench Charles T. Burr Ithaca, NY Reversible ratchet. The spring-loaded ratchet pin can be pulled out part way and rotated 180 degrees to reverse the ratchet action, or to release the ratchet head from the frame.
The head is shown with a variety of size, shape, and adjustable jaw options.
This patent was the basis for Greene, Tweed & Co.'s venerable FAVORITE REVERSIBLE RATCHET.

486,651 Nov. 22, 1892 Speed Indicator Louis T. Weiss Brooklyn, NY This speed indicator adds a bell to indicate every 100 revolutions, allowing the operator to concentrate on his watch instead of watching the speed indicator

Ads for the tool as produced noted potential uses in multiple fields of endeavor where a "soft face" hammer was used. The design made it easy to replace damaged "soft face" materials or select an appropriate face material. Ads noted copper, wood, rawhide or leather, etc. as face materials.
