In 1859-60 San Francisco's Pacific Foundry, on First Street between Mission and Howard, was being operated by Goddard, Hanscom & Rankin and was making steam engines among other products. "Hanscom" was likely John O. Hanscom who in 1863 was a partner at the Ætna Iron Works.

By 1869 the Pacific Iron Works was at the same site and being operated by Goddard & Co., a partnership of Ira P. Rankin, Albert P. Brayton and A. C. Austin. They claimed "Established 1850". Exclusive west coast rights to the "Hartford engine". "Sole agents for Huntoon's Patent Governor." By 1872 A. C. Austin had left the partnership and the superintendent was George W. Fogg; the mention of the Hartford engine had been dropped. An 1875 ad is nearly identical to the 1872 ad except that the Huntoon governor is no longer mentioned.
