This company was active in the early 1870s. Our best guess based on very limited information is that in about 1873, Dunklee & Allen (believed to have been founded by Benjamin F. Dunklee and Daniel C. Allen) split into Dunklee & Tilton and D. C. Allen & Co. Apparently D. C. Allen & Co. was taken over by Frank M. Stevens, perhaps in 1876 or early 1877, then was quickly acquired by John A. White.

Information Sources

  • A decrepit 36" bandsaw from this company was observed. There were two labels cast into it. "D. C. Allen & Co. / Concord, N.H." and "Granite State / Patented May 26, 1874".
  • A bandsaw design that received an 1874 patent date and was used by D. C. Allen & Co. was subsequently used by John A. White Co.
  • Patent records provide the given names of Daniel C. Allen and Benjamin F. Dunklee, and provide data points on when the businesses were operating.
  • The book, New Hampshire at the Centennial from 1876, mentions that at the State Exhibit, D. C. Allen & Co. of Concord exhibited their Eastern Star mowing machine.
