This company dates back to sometime before 1920. They made abrasive wheels and various specialty sanding, grinding, and polishing systems. From the late 1940s through to at at least the early 1970s they made a wide-belt sander designed for flattening panels and hardwood veneer sanding.

In about 1999 this company was acquired by Sant-Gobain Group.

Information Sources

  • Patents provided information on the years in which the company was actively developing their wide-belt sander. To investigate the possibility that Carborundum acquired the sander via takeover, we looked at the patentees' previous patents. There are no links to any other company that might have made a sander.
  • Seen on eBay: Stroke sander labeled, "Carborundum Machine Division / The Carborundum Company / Niagara Falls, NY".
  • Also reported: a knife sharpener/grinder (hand crank) with "Niagara No 11 / The Carborundum Co. Niagara Falls NY" on the face plate.
