2,002,991 May. 28, 1935 Backlash remover Charles B. De Vlieg Jackson, MI This patent was originally applied for on 1928-11-01 but that was abandoned when DeVlieg Machine Tool Co. went bankrupt. The patent covers the use of a pair of nuts on a feed screw along with a mechanism to finely adjust the nut spacing so as to eliminate backlash. The inventor made several subsequent improvements to this simple but important invention. This patent is one of a trio granted to Charles B. De Vlieg that were broadly useful across a range of machine tools. All three were assigned to Associated Patents, Inc., a licensing consortium; see the DeVlieg Machine Co. history on VintageMachinery.org (link below patent image).

There is disclosed a self-retracting tool holder assembly for mounting a tool on a machine in a predetermined location with respect to a workpiece, the assembly incorporating a tool holder mounted for pivotal movement about an axis so arranged that when the tool is fed by the machine into engagement with the workpiece the forces created by such engagement will cause the tool holder to pivot about said axis to advance the tool into a seated machining position in which the machining portion of the tool is displaced into the workpiece both in the feed direction and in a direction at right angles thereto, and spring means to automatically retract the tool to an inactive position out of engagement with the workpiece when the feed of the tool stops, whereby when the tool is returned by the machine the tool will not cause a drag line to be formed on the just-machined surface of the workpiece.

There is disclosed a presettable tool supporting device for machine tools which permits the tool to be preset in its tool holder away from the machine and then quickly and easily mounted on the machine in an accurately predetermined position, thus eliminating the need for adjusting the tool on the machine. The disclosed tool supporting device generally comprises a tool holder having means for affixing a tool thereto, a base member having attaching means for semi-permanently attaching the base member to a machine tool, locating means preferably in the form of complementary corrugated surfaces engageable with one another when the tool holder is placed in engagement with the base member to locate each with the other along two major axes while permitting relative movement between the two along a third major axis, stop means for locating the tool holder with respect to the base member in a predetermined position along the third axis, and releasable locking means for detachably locking the tool holder to the base member in said predetermined position. Several embodiments are disclosed, including one in which the locking means is accessible from the side and another in which access is from the top, and a further one in which locating and locking is accomplished on a second set of axes in addition to the first set. Alternative stop means and locking means are also disclosed.
