Co., of Springfield, IL, and bearing this patent number. These devices measure the turning angle of each wheel. The angles should not be equal because the inner wheel makes a tighter-radius turn than the outer wheel. At the time of the patent, American automobiles typically had the left front wheel directly controlled by the steering gear while the right front wheel was connected via steering arm and tie-rod. This invention was intended as a companion piece to an axle straightening and camber adjusting mechanism also developed by this inventor; so far as we can tell a patent for that invention was not issued. See, however, patent 2,124,902, which was an improvement on this radius gauge; it also provides more detail on the axle straightening and camber adjusting mechanism.
