The witnesses on this patent pose a minor mystery: John C. Schott and Horace Thurston were both from Providence, although Schott moved to Brooklyn at about the time this patent was issued. Schott was a partner in button machinery maker Schott Brothers, and Thurston designed machinery for them before starting machine tool manufacturer Thurston Mfg. Co. We do not know how they ended up as witnesses for a Chicago-based engraving machine designer. |
