He established a machine shop in 1881, which in 1905 would incorporate as the Cummings Machine Works "to operate a foundry and machine shop. Henry H. Cummings is president and treasurer and the capital stock is $25,000." (From April 1905 The Foundry, page 101.)
The invention is a drill press that automatically adjusts its speed to the diameter of the drill or cutter. The power downfeed speed is continuously variable under control of the operator. The speed-change mechanism is adapted from the inventor's own patent 529,713.
1,463,116 Jul. 24, 1923 Sewing machine attachment for spiral stitching Analdo M. English Brookline, MA The assignee also made an unusual annular saw for tree-felling.
2,490,255 Dec. 06, 1949 Portable power actuated rim-driven annular saw Henry A. Chase Newtonville, MA This unusual saw was fairly popular at one time; it was sold as the "Sally Saw" by Cummings Machine Works.
