In 1887 the Dry Dock Engine Works were manufacturing steam engines and boilers, including stationary and portable engines. The office was at 48 Orleans St., and the principals were William Cowie (president and treasurer) and James Young (secretary). In 1899 the Dry Dock Engine Works were part of an acquisition-merger that created the Detroit Shipbuilding Co., a subsidiary of Cleveland-based American Ship Building Co.
