Established in about 1844 by Philetus W. Gates And Hiram H. Scoville. Gate bought out Scoville and in 1848 took A. H. Hoge as a partner, who was subsequently bought out by George S McKnight. The company was then named P. W. Gates & Co. Mr. Gates business interests included P. W. Gates & Co., Eagle Iron Works & Mfg. Co. and Gates & McKnight. The firm was in business until at least 1869, the Eagle Works Manufacturing Co. of Chicago made steam engines, sugar cane mills and sawmills among other products.
