This 19th century firm made tool holders for lathes and planers.

Information Sources

  • November 1907 Machinery has an article on the Carr Reversible Cutting-Off Tool Holder.
  • 1908-01-30 American Machinist notes a new catalog, "Carr Brothers, Syracuse, N. Y. Circular illustrating and describing tool holders, curring-off and side tool."
  • December 1908 Machinery.
The Carr Tool Holder, built by Carr Bros. of Syracuse, N. Y., and described in the new tools department of the November, 1907, issue of Machinery, has recently been improved by the provision of arrangement for adjusting the height of the tool post without losing any of the rigidity that characterizes the older form. It has also been adapted to the use of turning and boring tools, as well as side tools.
  • January 1909 Automobile Trade Directory lists this firm as a maker of boring bars, file and tool handles, and lathe and planer tools.
  • 1909 Year Book (Motor Cylopaedia) lists "Carr Bros.—Syracuse, N. Y., Mfrs. lathe and planer tools, boring bars, lathe and planer tool handles." They were also listed as a maker of tool boxes.
  • We learned of this maker in a Practical Machinist forum discussion about a lathe that was originally identified as being from Patterson, Gottfried & Hunter, a New York City tool and machinery dealer. The tool holder is stamped with "PAT FEB 2, 1904 / CARR BROS / SYRACUSE N.Y."
