Patent Number Date Title Name City Description
50,691 Oct. 31, 1865 Scroll Chuck A. F. Cushman Hartford, Hartford County, CT
88,377 Mar. 30, 1869 Chuck George B. Fairman Rochester, NY The object of this invention is to make a chuck in which the jaws can be used, combined or separately, it being often desirable to use the jaws independently, so that the article being turned, may be moved out of the centre when required, without changing the chuck. This is accomplished by turning out the buttons G from the crease e, and moving out the rack A until they will enter the crease c, thereby moving it out of gear with the pinions on the shafts E, which operate the jaws. This allows any one of the jaws to be moved transversely by applying a wrench to the outer end of the pinion-shaft E. Another and great advantage in this arrangement is the rapidity with which the jaws can be moved in and out. The rack being six to one of the pinion in diameter, one turn of it moves the jaws six times as fast as can be done by applying the wrench to the pinion-shaft E, as is the case with the common chuck of this class, and when the jaws are up against the metal to be clamped, the wrench can be applied to the pinion shaft E, and power is obtained, if required, to tighten the jaws.

2,777,704 Jan. 15, 1957 Precision Chuck Jaws Harry E. Sloan Hartford, Hartford County, CT Claims:
This invention relates to precision chuck means, and more particularly to adapter means for modifying a standard serrated jaw chuck to permit independent, precision adjustment of the individual jaws thereof.
The invention here is an improvement upon a related type of chuck disclosed in the patent to Harry I. Schuster, 2,401,971, dated 11 June, 1946.
As in the case of the chuck described in the aforesaid Schuster patent, this invention has especial application to power chucks, that is, chucks of the type in which two or more jaws are simultaneously moved in a radial direction to and from work-engaging position by pneumatic, electric or hydraulic power means. In such chucks, since they are normally used for large volume production work where a particular machining operation is repetitively performed on successive work pieces, itis essential to provide a precise adjustment of the individual work-engaging jaw elements of the chuck to insure fast and accurate gripping of the Work piece and proper centering thereof in the lathe or other machine tool. The present invention affords an effective means of accomplishing the-foregoing in a manner which has certain very desirable advantages over generally similar means heretofore employed for this purpose.
