Beginning in 1957, Sherrill Machinery Co. manufactured a patented wide-belt sanding machine designed for the furniture industry. In 1962 Sherrill discontinued all of their woodworking machinery in order to focus on their textile machinery business. Their main sander distributor, one Frank Quis, arranged for J. C. Steele & Sons to take over the manufacture of the Sherrill sanders. Sherrill Machinery Co. gave them the patterns and designs but kept the patent rights and Steele began manufacturing the sanders in 1963. By 1966 only 69 machines had been sold and Steele discontinued the sanders. Steele remains in business making machinery for extruding bricks.
